Tax Season 2015: On Your Marks... Get Set... Go!

Tax Attorneys are often thought of only when fighting with the IRS.

In reality, we've been faced with a myriad of situations and are trained in preparing tax returns along with tax resolutions since they go hand-in-hand. We can help prepare a return and research a new problem for you, or be your trusted advisor on how to prevent owing the IRS in future years through a variety of options.

One way we can help is by providing useful tools such as our 2015 Tax Organizer, which you can find here It may be useful to you in preparing for filing your return this year. We encourage everyone to be proactive in filing federal tax returns or extensions by the April 18th deadline to avoid penalties and have a peaceful remainder of the year. With that, here are a few things to keep in mind as tax season begins.

The IRS has opened up the ability to E-File, so you can expect to receive your documents soon - if you haven't already. W-2's must be issued by employers no later than January 31, 2016. 1099's will be issued no later than February 28, 2016.

Other tax forms are being mailed from financial institutions and received over the next month. So, as soon as you have your documents together, we can file your return between now and April 18, 2016.

More Complicated Returns

Many taxpayers have a more complicated return due to other circumstances: some own houses, have rental properties, own a small business, or have a farm. Their returns are more complicated and preparing their return can seem like more of a chore instead of an exciting event where they look forward to a speedy and bountiful refund.

For those who are members of an S Corporation, Partnership, or C Corporation and are waiting for a different return to be filed, it's more of a dreaded waiting game before they can file their personal return. There are a lot of moving parts to these complicated returns, so we can address those more in depth in later posts.

Looking for the Right Tax Attorney

Each situation will be unique and different, and for some this year may be more stressful because of an unknown variable, so you may be in the market looking for someone to help in your tax preparation. Whether it's because you need a new tax preparation expert because of retirement, your own personal life changes or because your last person did not do a good job, finding the right person to work with is key.

For anyone looking to hire a tax attorney for the first time, your reasoning is your own, but may be because you have been in an issue with the IRS before, and want to ensure your are working with someone who has your best interests in mind. Or, you may have just found yourself owing the IRS in previous years, and need an advisor to create a plan to stop owing the IRS and also get you into the best resolution possible.

Whether you fall into any one of these categories or there is another tax question you have, we welcome the opportunity to assist you.
